May Day is a time to celebrate spring and uphold justice. Toward the end of the 19th century workers unions came together to fight against long hours and deplorable working conditions. The events that unfolded in Chicago influenced citizens around the U.S. to ban together and protest for basic human rights. May Day is regarded throughout many countries across the globe as day of rest and reflection. For people of color in this country, it is a day of recognizing the freedoms denied to us and the basic human rights we are still fighting for on a day-to-day basis. It's a time to speak out against police brutality, the prison industrial complex, unfair wages, inequity, gentrification and inequality!
Many countries honor this day by giving their citizens the day off. This is not the case for Americans residing in the U.S. As such, this practice is about honoring the acts of social justice and mindful living.
